In 1945, following the Central College concept introduced under the visionary leadership of C.W.W. Kannangara, known as the father of free education in Sri Lanka, Dikwella Vijitha as well entered into a new era. Students from distant rural areas such as Deniyaya, Akuressa, Hakmana, Urubokka, and even the students from the towns in the Hambantota district such as Tangalle, Tissamaharama, Hambantota, Ambalantota, Hungama, and Ranna selected Vijitha Central College to pursue their secondary education. It became the preferred institution for talented students, even surpassing other central colleges in the region.
Despite limited physical resources and buildings in the early days, the increasing student population required morning and evening school sessions. At the same time, in the early 1960s, Vijitha made history when the highest number of students gained admission to the university, outnumbering many of the leading schools in the island. In addition to academic excellence, the school promoted aesthetic subjects, commerce education, scouting, and sports, enhancing students’ all-round development. Dedicated principals and committed teachers played a major role in shaping the school’s success.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the volleyball and netball teams achieved all-island championships, bringing great honor to the school. In the 1990s, it emerged as a leading sports school, producing athletes who achieved victories not only nationally but also internationally. The college anthem refers to producing knowledgeable, virtuous, and venerated citizens. Based on this vision, Vijitha has produced many distinguished alumni who have excelled in various fields not only in Sri Lanka but also overseas, including athletes, ministry secretaries, diplomats, director generals, and prominent professionals bringing honour and pride to the institution.
To top it all, the strength of the old boys’ associations, both local and overseas, shines so brilliantly that it continues to lend its helping hand towards the school’s progress. Just as Vijitha shone in the past, it continues its journey forward, not only as a pride of Dikwella but of the entire Southern Province and Sri Lanka. With the blessings and support of all well-wishers, the school moves forward in its mission of nurturing future generations. May the Vijitha flag fly high..!
