On 19 January 1942, with the aim of providing education to the children of the rural community of Dikwella, Vijitha Central College was established as a great center of learning. Situated on the Matara-Tangalle main road, about 22 miles from Matara town, and close to the Dikwella town area, the school was built on a beautiful land extent of about 25 acres. The scenic surroundings, bordered by hills and overlooking the vast Indian Ocean, create a picturesque and inspiring environment ideal for education. The land for the school was generously donated by philanthropists living in surrounding villages such as Dikwella, Dodampahala, and Hiriketiya. The school that began with a small group of students gradually grew into a strong educational institution serving the sons and daughters of the area.
